I am really tired of listening to Marco Rubio praising Trump for getting Europe to spend 5 percent of GDP on defence.
No country is spending more on defence to please Trump. We are spending more, because we are alone in the war with Putin. We are spending more, so we can lead the world, now that Trump has put the US in the back seat.
We could have finished Putin together, and the world would have been safer and wealthier. But instead Trump wanted a war with Venezuela. That is how dumb this is.

The 5% thing was a NATO pledge from long ago, and the US is actually right about that, but it's a very old story. At best, this is cover for the real story, "The rest of NATO is giving up on us."
@randahl it's a wise move, to ease reliance on trump and the USA out of the equation. Makes it easier to turn our backs (though it's wise to keep an eye on the rear view mirror, because we don't want to get backstabbed)

No, Mr. Fink, let's be honest. Europeans are spending 5% (by 2035) because reality has caught up with us. When we woke up, we were naked, Big Brother was gone, and the knife-wielding man was standing at the bedroom door. @randahl Trump and Rubio are right: it's a good thing EU spends more to defend itself, not to buy US weapons, of course, European ones, so that we grow up and don't depend on not only an unreliable ex-partner but on a sinking country in the deep dark waters of fascism and theocracy
