Hej folks!
I need your advice. My family loves to record TV shows, but as I just recently learned their TV DRMs all the records which makes switching super hard.

I was playing around with Linux and DVR last time 25 years ago, so I wonder:

What is the current state of the art setup for TV recording for cool kids? You know, DRM-free, recordable on an external USB drive, etc.

Ideally looking for a set top box that I can just plug in, but willing to glue stuff together.

@sturmsucht A fewcyesrs ago, I had a mythtv box.
Also played with Kodi.
My current box is a humax, but it is getting so annoying for various reasons I am thinking of building a new one.
The biggest issue is the decoder card.
Are Hauppage still available?

@sturmsucht I don鈥檛 use it much but my Emby setup can record broadcast TV using a HD Homerun, has the guide info etc and can stream it from there to a multitude of destinations (AppleTV, web browsers etc)

@Darius @sturmsucht "hd homerun" seems like a good fit without overcooking it :)

I've heard of using OSB Studio and video capture adaptors to do that but have no idea how to do it.

@dancingtreefrog I guess so and that would probably work for me, but not for my family.

For them I'm looking for a "here is a raspi / set top box with tv adapter and a remote, just plug it to the tv and have fun" solution

@sturmsucht
That's what I thought you had in mind. You might be able to turn a Raspi box into something like that. Good luck!

Really curious to see how this goes. Over 25 years ago I worked for an IT consulting mob and one of our guys was using Linux to DVR broadcast TV and even had a system to detect when the watermark for certain channels was present in order to skip the TV ads (which were not watermarked). He was a smart fella. Lives in a tree now.
