I want there to be freely available, low barrier, egalitarian, interactive real-time Internet chat systems.
I remember Christmas-day-spamming of IRC going back to literally 1993. It's been 33 years, so I feel like maybe the protocol is broken?
I appreciate those dealing with it, but I do think we have to consider if it's time to unite behind another protocol? XMPP?
@bkuhn thank you, I appreciate you saying that. I hope I didn't come off as brash myself.
There's a bunch of protocols out there, and a lot of communities moved to them, for better or (sometimes) worse. They all have their pros and cons.
But I do appreciate folks who still run IRC servers, and put in the effort and love into that. And I can totally see IRC re-emerging, improved, at some point, as all the alternatives I have seen so far are... wanting.
