Here in Europe we are told to turn our phones/devices to flight mode for the entire flight. I did once travel on a Air NZ Heathrow to LA plane that had free satellite wifi but that is the exception.

I really don’t want to be nitpicky about this because I did find it helpful to be able to see my plane's progress while in the air, but the whole downward tilted plane thing is pretty weird.

It's a long black bar. Just make a cute little plane flying at a 0 degree angle moving across the black bar from left to right. Done.
