I feel like my generation got "skipped" by the emulation craze.

emulation is great for like, console games, but I didn't grow up on consoles, I grew up on windows 98. it seems like retroarch and dosbox have basically solved everything from _before_ windows 98, and wine/proton are good for most stuff from the post-XP era. but the games I'm most nostalgic for -- Zoombinis, Backyard Baseball, Artrageous!... it's a bit of a pain to emulate them, right? you can sort of run them in Wine but there's so much fiddling and it feels so fragile, I had a Lutris setup on my steam deck that completely broke with a Lutris update so I don't trust Lutris anymore, which means I basically have to do all the Wine commands by hand

does anyone here have experience with this? is there a dosbox-esque "plug and play" solution for win98 CD-ROM games?

@nycki would virtualbox be any help?
I'm not sure the 3d acceleration is that great, and there is a limit to graphics memory, but the software is free, so you could try?

@nycki cool. no idea what the licence is though.
I've never bothered looking as it's free for personal use and the source is available.
