At the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (#NCSA) is advancing a bold vision to position Illinois as a national leader in research software engineering. Driven by its Software directorate, it is building a centralized, campus-wide body of Research Software Engineers (RSEs) whose collective expertise strengthens recruitment, retention, and long-term institutional knowledge. By cultivating strong faculty partnerships, increasing campus leadership awareness, and establishing visible pathways for engagement, Illinois is ensuring RSEs become an essential and recognized component of the university’s research ecosystem. Inspired by high-performance cultural models, the NCSA Software directorate fosters an environment where innovation, collaboration, and professional growth thrive. Clear articulation of shared values, recognition of staff achievements, and the removal of structural barriers empower RSEs to lead transformative scientific and technical efforts.
