Here in Edmonton there was freezing rain last evening after a daytime high of +8C and I woke up to snow and -18C
… heading your way, our gift to you (I think we’re re-gifting the BC atmospheric river)

ps it hard to read this one as anything other than a warning about yellow snow, now it falls from the sky too?
@sundogplanets I have to say, I've lived in Winnipeg for 20+ years and this is my first "Flash Freeze Warning"
@sundogplanets oh noes, the yellow snow is coming .. 😉
@Toxic_Flange Yeah, somebody in Weather Canada didn't think through the obvious implications of their new weather-warning-colour system...
Oh apparently this awful mess happening today is called an "Alberta Clipper"
Which invites the age-old Canadian joke I've shared way too many times: Why is it so windy in Saskatchewan?
.
.
.
.
.
Because Alberta blows and Manitoba sucks!
@sundogplanets we use this down south to describe Iowa, Nebraska, and Illinois 😂
Well, all the assorted yellow warnings coalesced into an orange blizzard warning. Fuck.
The blizzard is going to start with a few hours of "freezing rain mixed with snow." It just keeps getting better and better! Going to try to get a lot done outside before it gets terrible... (edited to add a screenshot of the gross mess that's coming)
@sundogplanets I suppose your Saskatchewan winter weather choices are minus 30, or around zero and this.
When I lived in Nova Scotia, the winter weather choices were: (i) storm blowing in off the Atlantic with stupid amounts of snow, (ii) a bit above freezing and slush everywhere. (ETA: (i) and (ii) were usually about three days apart, rinse and repeat.)
The very fluffy dogs are very happy about more snow. The goats are very happy to have a barn to snuggle in and will avoid the snow, thank you very much. (The chickens won't even consider coming out of the coop. Fair.)
Tow truck drivers in Saskatchewan are superheroes!
(Everything is fine now! Everyone is ok, and tow truck drivers are awesome.)
Blue is "travel not recommended" which is pretty much everything around Regina now. I really really hope the schoolbuses are running this afternoon... School bus drivers in Saskatchewan (and everywhere), also superheroes!
Hooray for bus drivers!! Superheroes!
Not a blizzard yet, but I am so grateful I didn't have to drive anywhere.
@sundogplanets oh goodness! Are you getting slammed by this snow storm, too? It’s just beginning in Edm.
Stay safe 🫶🏻
i've always felt that goats are not given the credit for intelligence that they deserve. ;)
Chickens are full of envy for the geese, who can migrate to a warmer place 😄
@sundogplanets I like seeing "blizzard" on an hourly forecast! here they would just say "snow" and you'd have to dig around in Weather Service warnings to figure out how much...
@sundogplanets snow layered on ice... lovely 😬
@sundogplanets appropriate warning colour too >.<
@sundogplanets Meanwhile, I have a high pressure system moving in with rain and it will likely be 80°F mañana. 😭
Stay safe.
@sundogplanets Ew. Are you ready for it? I imagine the animals are ok with hunkering down for a bit?
@sundogplanets
I hadn't heard of the clipper before so I looked it up. Found this gem on Wikipedia: "Storms beginning their southward treks from other Canadian provinces, far less common than clippers, are often still referred to as clippers, or by the fanciful names Saskatchewan screamer, Manitoba mauler or Ontario scari-o." 😆 That last one is going to live in my head for a while!
Well I had never heard it so I'm glad you've shared it again!
@sundogplanets Heard this one many years ago, except involving Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas.
@sundogplanets Thank you Alberta from Ontario! Because I guess it's explaining what I'm reading on Environment Canada app. 😆
@sundogplanets And the most beautiful thing about it: it is LITERALLY true.
@sundogplanets thank you, now i can rag on Wyoming and Iowa all in one sentence
@sundogplanets It was 16c in Victoria yesterday afternoon, ten above week average , but then extreme wind that took out large sections of the area power.
@sundogplanets that swinging between not freezing and freezing is the worst, everything turns into ice...
There’s been a spot heat wave if you wanna call that I think closer to Texas. It’s 30° warmer seasonal average that was what was forecast.
Don’t know how long it was supposed to last. Something of a rather abrupt shift and temperature.
This was posted 20 hours ago.. kind of crazy
@sundogplanets The swings in the prairie weather are so atypical! I’m near Winnipeg and we’re getting the same system coming through. Warm to cold to warm to cold to warm… 😵💫
