Real question for anyone who knows (like a researcher): are people actually worse at handling their feelings and impulses now, or does it just seem that way?

I don't want to discourage you asking such a legitimate question. however, I could show you studies that sufficiently proof that attention spans from 1960 to 2000 actually increased (Protzko, Marshmallow Test). conversely, I could show increased inattention due to mobile devices or nutrition ("inattention in adolescents was significantly associated with MP ownership" Zheng, Ghao et al Association between mobile phone use and inattention in 7102 Chinese adolescents: a population-based cross-sectional study).

with sufficient digging I could also sufficiently show that neither is true. I could also make up a study that shows that adults today have much worse delayed gratification ability than teenagers aurashrug
