Which of these icons do you most associate with color? As in would you know that one of these as a button would manage/change/edit colors.

I’m going to thread this with a poll because you can’t combine polls/images in Mastodon posts.

Thank you in advance. 🙌🏻

🧵 1/2

#Color #Iconography #Design #UIDesign #VisualFunction

Two icons, each with a letter label beneath it. The first represents a color swatch book that is open. The second is three circles representing a triadic color scheme.

@markwyner The swatches in A make more sense to me for picking colors, granted I've held a swatch book in my hands before. If I saw B in a graphics app I'd probably think it was for a channel mixer.

In case it helps, I would say they both invoke colors, but A far more clearly invokes ONLY colors, whereas B could also be other things, like a Venn diagram, a stack of spheres, etc.

@markwyner I think A needs some lines to separate the tips of each card.

@markwyner B, but include the lines where they overlap instead of looking like one circle on top of another.

@markwyner Interesting one... I think if I saw either of these icons without being prompted, neither would make me think of "color". And actually, even with your prompt, I didn't make the association right away (my first instinct was "WTF does this have to do with color, these are both black-and-white images"), but it was significantly easier for me to make the connection with image B than with image A. So I voted B. In retrospect I dunno if "neither" would have been more appropriate... 🤔

@markwyner @EdwinG A makes me think of print, B for projection or screen. A also makes me think of the associated brand from my previous life in desktop publishing

@markwyner my logical brain says A, but my intuition says B.

A is more pretty and makes more sense, so I would still go for that one. dunno why my intuition is so wrong 🤣

One stands out to me simply because of my experience with print shops but that doesn’t necessarily translate to other people’s experiences.
