It's been my suspicion that trying to fight AI corporations on copyright grounds wouldn't be a good strategy, because ultimately what would happen is they'd end up in a situation that just entrenches them and media megacorps as monopolists. And, well... https://deadline.com/2025/12/disney-openai-deal-sora-1236645728/

Add on top of that how centralization of the web has lead to almost all art being published being under a ToS that can sell the data to OpenAI and ultimately indies get squeezed out of the fight.

@cwebber

So it is now clear that AI need copyrights ?

They will abandon indie creations and focus their models on CorporateProperty ? Or at least it is what they sell as their plan ?

Seems like good news to me.

Indies have more rights than ever to say "leave us out". And AI can loop on Frozen Remake 3653.

As indies would never have been part of any deal, that seems like one of the least bad route.

@cwebber

So what is the #TTP (Time To Porn) for the Disney characters on #Sora now that they handed them a license?
I bet it takes one hour at most until there is the first fully AI generated porno with Elsa.

@cwebber precisely, copyright helps mainly publishers, not the authors...

@cwebber that plus fighting them on copyright grounds leads to copyright maximalism, which fucks over the Commons.

@cwebber that Elsa reminds me of one Mary Tiles Texas character who's allegedly "not white enough" because of green eyes and Irish moms

@cwebber Note that OpenAI can’t pay this. But money didn’t change hands. It was written up in double-entry bookkeepings of some banks as collateral. The amount of money in the economy just simply grew, as did the stocks, which grew GDP.

They’ll keep increasing debt and Trump will smile, until it all crashes and they get a bailout and the rest of us all suffer… Or they secure an even great loan somewhere else and pretend to pay it off with another piece of monopoly money.

@cwebber I think the very idea of "intellectual property" is absolutely silly and only serves the big media companies. What we need is an intellectual commons.

Actually, funny, that depends upon where you are located. EU copyright might be a bit more creator friendly.

The Austrian implementation of the copyright directive literally give the force of law to robots.txt and literally forbids creating databases even if derived information from digitally available copyrighted creations without a license.
(With a broad exemption for research, but for that you need to be affiliated with a research institution.)

@cwebber i didn’t want to believe that disney has ruined star wars. But here it is. Star wars slop will be everywhere. They will water down its antifascist message by any means necessary.

@cwebber they'll take the work of 2 or 3 AI "creators", slap it on disney+, make a promoted instagram page for them & try to say "see this is good for artists actually ." Concurrent with that will be a layoff of 200 people that spent their lifetimes getting real good at creating art.
Great for the starched collar guys that never actually made anything, not so much for everyone else.
