Watching people debate mask efficacy on national TV in the UK is surreal.

We trust masks for surgeons, healthcare workers, and every kind of airborne hazard.

Even basic blue surgical masks cut risk by around 50–60%… which, in case you’re shit at maths, is still miles better than 0%.

I feel like I'm going crazy,...but that's what I get for reading the news.

@kristiedegaris
While we were just coming out of the worst of the COVID pandemic, I naively assumed that going forward we would use evidence-based approaches to implement appropriate mitigation practices based on risk levels. So if there was a rise in cases, we would take precaution A, if cases continued to rise, add precaution B, etc... When cases fell, remove appropriate precautions.
It has been really deflating to see, not only that this didn't happen, but also how profoundly I misunderstood the broader social/cultural world that I was inhabiting. The world turned out to be far crueler, anti-intellectual, and uncompassionate than I had previously allowed myself to believe.

@kristiedegaris its collective insanity, even moreso when you visit a hospital and witness this play out when every staff member present must be cognisant of the harm/benefits … I also don't understand how most (all?) public spaces are not all filtered to hell these days, we are a stupid species really!
