Giant anteater

This giant anteater was roaming the plains of El Encanto del Guanapalo, Colombia. It uses its claws to dig open ant and termite colonies and its thin, long, sticky tongue to catch them inside their nests. We had to get up before sunrise to see it but were able to get quite close without disturbing it. It is larger than I anticipated, probably 2 meters long when including the tail.

A photo of a large black and grey mammal on a grass plain. It has an elongated head suitable to be pushed into holes. Its large claws are visible, formed into a shovel-like shape for efficient digging. It has strong legs and a long, bushy tail.
