There is a dearth of information regarding this fellow's arrest. There's a grand jury indictment but very little info. Sounds coercive.
Unless there's individualized concern and evidence of a crime beyond the mere fact that this man deleted information on his phone before entering or leaving the US, where's the harm?
It was his data. If the Feds have probable cause, they can recover much of the data from his service provider. Perhaps they're afraid this guy might start a trend.
