I'm trying to think of what makes emacs "emacs" and not just a lisp image, and I think it is b/c everything is built around buffers (and really text in buffers) and this makes it easy to build things, almost like unix pipes and text.

Not a hot take, but a bit of loose thought that dropped out of my head today and possibly wrong.
