This comment by Gordon needs to be read in light of the long rant I posted yesterday about the slow collapse of the US since Reaganism kicked in;

This leaves Aotearoa in a position comparable to that of small client states of the USSR when it collapsed. Cuba, for example.

Our government doesn't seem to have noticed the observable collapse of functioning democratic governance in the US. I's doggedly wasting public money on military hardware, for hypothetical wars that are totally avoidable, and that we would be better to stay out of if they ever happened (eg US vs. China).

All at a time when our public services are grossly under-resourced and our infrastructure is crying out for public investment. It's maddening.
