🆕 blog! “The Web Runs On Tolerance”

If you've ever tried to write a computer program, you'll know the dread of a syntax error. An errant space and your code won't compile. Miss a semi-colon and the world collapses. Don't close your brackets and watch how the computer recoils in distress.

The modern web isn't like that.

You can make your HTML as malformed as you like and the web-browser will …

One cannot choose one's audience, I guess!

I was nodding along in full agreement for the first part; I love Postel’s law and I was never onboard with all the anti–Postel’s-law rhetoric like “if all you primitive screwheads would stop accepting invalid input the internet would only have well-formed syntax” which I don’t think is true.

But then I got to the last part where it’s a slag on XHTML. The current situation with XHTML and HTML both co-existing is great. XHTML is really really useful for things like SVG editors, Atom/RSS integration and many other workflows that are a li’l bit more vertically integrated.
