Can any desktop #Linux users offer recommendations for a low- to mid-grade image editing program? I'm looking to replace Paint.NET when I migrate from Windows. I want something with multi-layer capability, effects, etc., but let's face it, I'm not a professional artist; I'll mostly be using it to stitch together memes.

I know of That Program Whose Name Is a Slur. I'm dubious about it partly because of that, and also bc I've heard its UI is awful. There are better options, right?
