# No permission, no travel: UK set to enforce ETA scheme

> Applying for an ETA is quick and simple through the official UK ETA app, and the cost is competitive at £16

I wonder if one can apply and pay via a website, without an app.

*Edit*: yes, although the press release doesn't say so.

> If you cannot download the app on your phone, you should apply online.

GOV.UK

No permission, no travel: UK set to enforce ETA scheme

From February 2026, visitors will not be able to travel to the UK without advance permission.

@neil Does one have to pay the tourist tax if they land at Heathrow and are bound for King's Cross to catch the Eurostar? I ask, because I did that for free a handful of years ago. Is this a case of taking away our AUX jack and selling it back to us?

@neil One of the annoying side effects of this is that dual citizens like myself now need to have a British passport to enter the country, as you cannot get an ETA on your foreign passport if you also hold British citizenship.

Once the EU’s ETIAS comes into force I suspect I will also need to have an EU passport to enter the EU, so I’ll need to keep renewing both passports, which takes considerable time and money (especially the EU one as every renewal requires a trip to the embassy with the whole family…)

@neil Does the app read e-passports? I don't think that's possible from a website.

@mansr One can use the website, and one just needs a photo of the applicant's passport and face.

@neil went through it a while ago, the nagging to use the app is painful. Feels more like a tourist tax.
The good thing is that it's valid for a few years

@peturdainn @neil It was also super buggy, in my experience. Wish I'd known about the webpage!
