@slightlyoff @fugueish Thats seriously fucked up
@slightlyoff @fugueish @davepolaschek more requests for more enshitification.
How much is Javascript?
@SpaceLifeForm @fugueish Median JS is now ~680K on the wire, or nearly 3MB uncompressed. P75 is 1.3MB (!!!!), and growing faster than overall page weight:
@slightlyoff yeah let's go back to 320x200 256 color graphics that took teams of people years to draw and program
for every web page
@slightlyoff @fugueish Frontend is definitely going up, which is bad, but (AFAICT from that page) the largest proportion of bytes, and the largest %age increase over most timescales, is video. Even though the median number of video requests hasn't risen
Video is higher-def now. People have higher-def screens, and higher-def cameras just on their phones. If you're looking at pro, of even "hobby youtuber" setups, they're going to be even more
Is it really fair to blame that on front end culture?
@slightlyoff @fugueish Imagine if we just decided NOT to shove everything down the pipe and make the browser do everything?
Developers should only have access to 56k modems.
