OK I'm about to throw in the towel on MiSTer and I need someone to help me understand something before I do so.

I have a SNAX64 adapter for using original controllers for Nintendo 64 games. When I plug in a Nintendo 64 controller, the core acts like **every single button is being pressed** and panic ensues. Absolute chaos in the game.

Does anyone out there have a SNAX64 adapter and is successfully using it with the N64 core? Have any resources?

@vkc Is it possible that, like the N64, it requires the controllers to be plugged in at startup/initialization?

The N64 doesn't support hot-swapping controllers, and conversely IDK if the controllers support being hot swapped.

@mausmalone I was able to hot swap player 2 during a game, so I don't think hot swapping is the issue?

@vkc It just doesn't sit right with me - to repurpose USB 3 for a totally different purpose which is not USB 3, namely SNAX. It seems a little too hacky for me. I would have preferred they used some other kind of connector, which would never be accidentally confused for USB 3 (or other commonly used connector).

@d1 I'm fine with it, life is hacky

@vkc Have you tried the official forum? It’s possible to find some information there at times. Seen issues with controllers now and then. Sometimes there’s issues for a few releases as well.

I have a PiMT32 I had to give up on, just utterly acted wrong all the time and that was it.:(

The best of luck!

(Note, please don't tell me about other ways to get an N64 controller working, I very specifically want to use SNAX/SNAC as it's important for future plans I have)

This is the board I have, which is absolutely failing at its one job, and I can't figure out if it's something I'm missing because I'm not in some Discord or something.

OK, interesting additional data point: the SNAX64 works fine for player 2.

I plugged a second N64 controller in to player 2 and set player 1 to be a Bluetooth controller. When I did that, player 2's controller worked! So then I tried player 1's original controller in the player 2 slot, and that worked as well!

So, my guess is something goofy on the player 1 port? This might require... a mulltimeter.

I've got an email in to the shop where I bought this adapter.

In the mean time, I've confirmed the issue also happens with an SNES adapter, but **not** with a Genesis adapter.

IIRC there's a level shift that happens with Sega systems that didn't happen on Nintendo- I'm wondering if I found my bug?

(I am not a hardware expert, can barely hunt and peck through a schematic, this is gonna be fun)

So today in "I made a mistake", I accidentally plugged the wrong power cable into my MiSTer and fried the USB board.

The rest of it seems OK but now future testing is on hold until I get a new USB board.

Sigh sigh sigh sigh sigh sigh

@vkc sorry. :(

I'm a klutz with these things and seeing peoples' MiSTer setups always gives me a little spark of panic.

Ohh... I am deeply sorry to hear about the passing of your USB-Board.
I wish you peace to bring comfort, courage to face the days ahead.
Times will get better... I promise, and I'm sure you'll find a new board, that will support you in future.

@vkc The MiSTer is a fun piece of hardware but wow is it unforgiving 😞 It’s like the special port that looks like a USB but isn’t, but you can hook up other stuff there.

@vkc I've blown up camera gear before because it had two Micro USB-B ports... one port used a non-standard 16V+ Micro USB-B to D-Tap and the other expected the standard 5V.

Felt like a deliberate stitch up. I guess the magic smoke really wanted to escape.

@vkc it's ok. in the olden days when the BBC Micro was the 8bit computer of choice for UK education I was on work experience at the local poly and shoved 240 volts straight into the beeb's tube. made a very loud bang. Didn't just do it once either. did it twice in 3 days. No waiting for a new board in those days it was see if Acorn will cover it under warranty :)

@vkc It sounds like a short (I don't own a snax, but shorted buttons can seem pressed all at once in other stuff I've had when there was a short)

Same when you plug in controller 2 in port 1? Might rule out a weak connection to one of the pins.

Then I think your guess might be right: something with the port. Hopefully you can get it fixed 💪🏻
