Have just had that thing happen *again* where someone feels completely free in mocking the #metal I love to my face. Look: I don’t go around saying how embarrassing I find the XKCD strips people seem to think of as clever, or how smug and self-satisfied Terry Pratchett reads to me. I see that people get joy and validation from these things, and that’s sufficient, even if I myself privately think they’re cringe and awful. I just wish folks would extend the same courtesy to fans of heavy music.

With the metals, people either get it or don't. Irregardless, metal is uniquely situated to express what is happening in our era, and we're so fortunate to be living and experiencing these creative and destructive expressions in real time.

I'm not sure why some people feel the urge to disparage the metals, or for that matter, anarchism. I think it may have something to do with these movements being underdogs, but also somewhat abrasive and offensive, so it's like a kneejerk defense to discredit something which by its nature calls into question the status quo and the dominant way of living and seeing the human world.

I try not to put down others media, beliefs, hobbies, subcultures, and interests, etc. etc. and so on and so on, but i understand the "see how do you like it" reaction. The high road is better maybe, but my nose gets too high on the air and a monocle appears, so that ethics may become a bit too arrogant. Still, a down and dirty hearty "fuck you!" can be satisfying.

I dig the Taoist approach, via Ursula Le Guin's iteration:

"Dim Brightness

Heaven will last,
earth will endure.
How can they last so long?
They don't exist for themselves
and so can go on and on.

So wise souls
leaving self behind
move forward,
and setting self aside
stay centered.
Why let the self go?
To keep what the soul needs."

@ink True! It doesn’t feel so good, does it? It feels like someone’s shitting on something meaningful to you, that you oughtn’t need to justify to anyone. It sucks!

@adamgreenfield agreed ... the world needs more joy not less.
