One of my favorite moments of Mimi was giving a tour of how I killed my lawn and replaced it with a bunch of native plants to bring back habitat for the birds and pollinators.

I said, "The honeybees and bumblebees love these flowers here. I haven't seen any hummingbirds yet. I wonder if they'll ever find this place..."

And then 💥 there appeared the first hummingbird in our yard!

Mimi founded Fortaleza Familiar and their logo is a hummingbird. Huītzilōpōchtli is the Aztec warrior god of the sun and sacrifice.

Next spring, Mimi, my sister and I were sitting in my backyard recounting this moment. Again I wondered out loud, "I haven't seen the hummingbirds return yet...I wonder when they'll return..."

And yet again, Mimi called in the first hummingbird of the season.

Next spring, when the first hummingbird buzzes past you, say hi to Mimi.
