Today on #TransgenderDayofRemembrance I remember mi hermane, Mimi Madrid.

I remember the way Mimi made my sister laugh, blush, light up, smile.

I remember how he loved my children in his strong, playful, lion way. How we would get up to fun uncle mischief with all the kids together.

I remember the love, reverence, joy and connection we shared for the natural world - rafting, hiking, being.

And if you have funds to spare holy shit is the funeral business a racket and there was so much money spent, unpaid time off work spent, etc to respond to Mimi's sudden and unexpected death.

Most of the people sacrificing are working class queer people of color. Fortaleza Familiar is small and nimble and very good about reimbursing the right people quickly and equitably.

I remember losing our minds at Nuggets games.

I remember his wisdom on politics - community organizing, gender liberation, intersectionality, power, love.

I remember her love for her four Chihuahuas (even Bonita) and how happy she was when I adopted Bo.

I remember how they saw the inner light in me and everyone around them and it made us each shine all the brighter for it.

Another photo of us and the Chihuahuas. I love the way Mimi is holding my sister and the way they are both beaming with joy.
