Anyone else feel like today’s world is too hung up on geniuses and luminaries? What about everyday people who are doing their best??

YES! In fact, so many problems stem from the myth of the lone genius changing the world, the guy who deserves to eat 10,000 more meals each day, have more bedrooms than he can sleep in at a time, than the thousands of workers who actually sweated to bring the vision to life.

@farah

The world is a pie, and this guy has a slice millions of times bigger than other workers. His workers often ignore the people on the sidewalk, whose share of the global pie is negative, and can't even be shown on the wealth allocation pie-chart of the globe.

Those are the marginalized people, the invisible, the voiceless. No political party cares about them. They are too broken to cross the hurdles it takes to vote. They are useless to the politicians, and their fans.

We wear money AR glasses that show us the price of everything as a slice of the pie, and our own worth is determined by them. In this AR/VR Zuck and Gates appear as towering giants. In this world, as long you obey the house rules, they'll treat you ok. You can go around the marketplace, and buy and sell. The people without money don't show up in this VR world. You can have all kinds of material treats with your money slice. Lots of incentive to keep the glasses on.

Don't you dare to take the glasses off, though. Or the metacops will punch down on you, throw you in jail. Because you see, IRL, Zuck is just a runt, and Gates is another schlumpy nerd. These tech bros only have power over you, when you wear the AR/VR money glasses. They won't let you tell others to take off the glasses either. That would be very bad for their net worth, their self worth. They hire security, hide in bunkers, because they can't look people in the eye. #FuckZuck

@farah This used to be what human interest stories were for in news coverage, somewhat, back before they were formulated for outright entertainment and captivation value.

I think this quote from David Graeber which in relation to pay also holds true in terms of how much society regards and values different types of work.

Meme featuring black text on a light peach coloured background, which reads,

“In our society, there seems a general rule that, the more obviously one's work benefits other people, the less one is likely to be paid for it. Again, an objective measure is hard to find, but one easy way to get a sense is to ask: what would happen were this entire class of people to simply disappear? Say what you like about nurses, garbage collectors, or mechanics, it's obvious that were they to vanish in a puff of smoke, the results would be immediate and catastrophic. A world without teachers or dock-workers would soon be in trouble, and even one without science fiction writers or ska musicians would clearly be a lesser place. It's not entirely clear how humanity would suffer were all private equity CEOs, lobbyists, PR researchers, actuaries, telemarketers, bailiffs or legal consultants to similarly vanish. (Many suspect it might markedly improve.) Yet apart from a handful of well-touted exceptions (doctors), the rule holds surprisingly well.”

David Graeber

There's also a small circular photograph of the author's face.
