Ok the #page42 exercise is going to make me cry.

I picked up "Losing the Sky" by Andy Lawrence, because it's been sitting on my desk as I slowly force myself to read this book about the environmental crisis happening in orbit, but written 5 years ago before it was really bad. Perfect example of how painful this is:

"Satellite pass within a few km of each other every day."

...it's actually more like every few minutes now.

@sundogplanets What are the current commercial betting odds for the Kessler effect to take place in the next 1,2,3 or 4 years? And if you win the bet, will there still be an internet infrastructure that can facilitate you collecting any winnings?

@sundogplanets very grim. Grimer than I thought. Sigh. Is everyone so short-sighted these days? Maybe the more money you have, the shorter sighted you become.

@sundogplanets I wonder what the total mass of space junk is now. Could there be a practical way to collect it and use it? It all was very expensive to boost up there.

@jhavok Well, it's all travelling at 7km/s in different directions...

@sundogplanets And unifying the velocities would probably lead to reentry...if the velocities are evenly distributed, there's a problem, but if it's a normal distribution, start by eliminating the stuff that's outside the bell. It has to be eliminated anyway.

If the normal stuff could be herded together, it might serve as a collector for the random bits.

@jhavok There are too many things wrong with your previous statements for me to correct/explain them all. May I humbly suggest you read some wikipedia articles about Low Earth Orbit?

@sundogplanets Yeah, I was just brainstorming there. Just realized that velocity would be related to altitude so you couldn't just pick out the slow stuff. I was imagining space scavengers who'd build their habitats out of the garbage circling the Earth.
