Today we’ll be giving evidence at the UK Home Affairs Select Committee on Digital ID.

We’ll be arguing against the introduction of this digital surveillance infrastructure, where we’ll have to constantly prove who we are as we go about our daily lives.

I don't mind having a layered digital ID that proves things on a wide scale of disclosure from:
1. I meet a particular attribute with no identity disclosure (like photo ID for buying alcohol)
2. I have to prove my identity for something but there's no central log
3. I have to prove my identity for something but there IS a central log
4. I not only have to prove my identity but I have to submit other personal attributes about myself (NHS number, citizenship, actual age - not just threshold, driving license number & status, etc.)
And so on...

There MUST be citizen's own control over data at a granular level and expressed against the context of the request - I may or may not choose to divulge my sexual orientation or medical history to a local authority for a parking space allocation, or my actual age to a ticket agency, when just proving I'm old enough is sufficient.

This would require an ombudsman to judge overreach of requested attributes, with meaningful sanctions.

Also would be nice to control the use of the data - like GDPR does, so companies can't use ID for profiling or marketing.
