The Onion simply exaggerates her words.

But Kelly went further than satire expected because she didn’t just state a bad idea, she built a mini-theory of moral reasoning around it. She methodically constructed a rationale for pedophilia. And then delivered it publicly.

Satire mocks.
But she justified.

That’s why if feels worse than satire: satire exaggerates, but she provided a structured rationale.

@theonion Admittedly, it may be an impossible challenge for The Onion to make fun of a gang of nazi rapists.

The Onion did their job, but Kelly’s real comments already operated at such an ethically extreme level that satire couldn’t outpace them. When reality exceeds satire’s usual boundaries, it leaves humorists with almost nowhere to escalate.
