@scottjenson you'll be happy to hear that this is something we're actively working on fixing properly (the extension is just a big hack). It's in the last stages of standardizing protocols so that this works across desktops and GUI toolkits. We're targeting to have this done by GNOME 50 (which is likely to ship in Ubuntu 26.04)

@scottjenson This is actually a weird time for Linux desktop. Wayland is mature enough that all major distros have switched to it and that's improved a lot of things - especially high dpi and fractional scaling. But! It has also left new gaps open. Window positioning is one of them. The previous windowing system (X) took care of that, but Wayland requires it to be implemented by the desktop environment. Most of them haven't implemented all Wayland protocols yet.

@scottjenson This is so because you have a choice. Gnome, the default desktop environment on Ubuntu, is just one of hundreds of possibilities.

And you don't have to install another distro. Just choose another desktop environment or window manager. Try KDE or xfce, Cinnamon, Lxqt and many more.

@scottjenson I dont feel like Ubuntu really gives the best UX, they kind of have their own commercial interest as a primary goal... Fedora (KDE) is IMO the most polished mainstream option, but some of the enthusiast distros (PopOS, Elementary, Catchy, etc.) have their advantages.
