My beef with "artists" is that conventionally many of them were products of extreme privilege.
E.g. I'm (now) a Mainer, the Wyeths do stunningly beautiful work but they roamed Chadds Ford and the Maine coast because they were independently wealthy. I *hear* that the alive ones have expressed some odious political views, that does not bode well for their ancestors.
I know that's not (just) what you mean by "art".

No, I think of art in a broader context. Craft if you like, but you make an excellent point. Most people don’t have time to be ‘high culture’ creators when they’re living hand to mouth.

Artists *get popular* because of their privilege leading to this illusion. Broadly speaking art is evenly divided regardless of financial or social privilege
