I appreciate deeply how it is exploring this theme.
As the title hints, the show is about a competition, that is being run (in part) for the entertainment of a select group. Thus it is both a show within a show and in some ways a reality show within a period drama frame story.
If it performs well, I suspect we'll see more diagetic historical reality shows (semi-clones), especially on Netflix: remakes a la Money Heist and or broadly similar premises.
My brain has fun with recognizing patterns and my track record with anticipating what Netflix will do globally is strong, so the odds that I will be right about this, based on past performance, are pretty good. 😉
The Last Samurai standing is, among many other things, a solid Reluctant Gunslinger Story.
Even if it's not a western, or about a gunslinger. Minor details, obviously.
