I don’t understand… when did Mozilla, a not-for-profit that owns a half-billion-dollar-a-year for-profit that gets its half-a-billion dollars every year from Google go bad? They seemed like such good folks.

@aral It was when their head honcho negotiated millions of dollars a year in compensation. If a company has a pay scale range going from volunteer to millions of dollars a year their policy decisions will always be in the service of massive profits.

@aral Firefox keeps pushing web standards and privacy. Google funding enables that work.

@rgo Of course ;)

It’s like that not for profit, Smokezilla, an ethical cigarette company that advocates for healthier living funded by billions from Philip Morris.

Mozilla’s head of public policy to me, back when: “I don’t know why you’re holding us to such a higher standard, we’re just another Silicon Valley tech company.”

Me to folks: “Mozilla is just another Silicon Valley tech company. They’re not what they say/you think they are.”

Folks to me: “Shut up, you tin-foil hat conspiracy theorist!”

Folks, today: “Umm, why is Mozilla acting like just another Silicon Valley tech company? I guess we’ll never know.”

🤷‍♂️

Earlier this year they acquired and incorporated into Firefox an ad-tech company founded by two of the top marketing guys of Facebook in the 2010s. They kept them as heads of ads or something like that.

When I said this was a terrible move and made Firefox future look dire I was called all kind of names 🤷

@aral Also Mozilla: Why are you treating us like a Silicon Valley company? We are righteous community dudes!

@mjj Yep. (My jaw did hit the floor when she told me that – the context for the original comment is that she was asking me to go easy on them at a conference we were both speaking at. I managed: “But that’s not what you tell everyone, is it?”)
