Hey people who have ever moved their Mastodon accounts to a different server, I need to ask you something:

When you moved, did you get a flood of email notifications about your followers transferring to the new Mastodon server?

If you did get a flood of emails, how recently did you move your account?

EDIT: Also it would help to know if you had email notifications about new followers switched on or off (more info at https://fedi.tips/how-do-i-stop-receiving-email-notifications-from-mastodon/)

@FediTips I migrated about a month and a half ago, and did not get email notifications about followers during the migration.

I do have email notifications active for new followers.

What is disabled for me is the setting 'Always send e-mail notifications', which has the explanation 'Normally e-mail notifications won't be sent when you are actively using Mastodon'.

Since I use the site virtually every single day, that might be a factor.

@FediTips When I moved in September I had email notification turned off at both ends of the move and received none. I did receive notifications within Mastodon.

@FediTips

Good q. I don't remember exactly anymore so it could well be that I reviewed my notification settings here much before I moved the other account here. A clue is that I don't get mails for follow requests here, so I might have turned them off before migration.

When migrating yes I got the follow requests in the notification timeline, but not via mail.

@FediTips I have moved my account a few times (due to servers shutting down). I have my email notifications set to OFF and have never gotten a follower transfer email.

@FediTips I have email notifications turned off so I didn't get emails, but I got a bazillion general notifications. I moved instances about a year ago.

@FediTips I moved last year (September 2024), but I set-up the new account to have all email notifications turned off before I ran the migration, so I didn't get any notifications (I had notifications turned off on the old account also). I did have the new account up and running for a couple of weeks where I just imported the people I was following before running the migration to move the followers, but that theoretically shouldn't have made a difference.

(if it matters I went from a vanilla mastodon server that I think was being run by masto.host to a glitch server with custom tinkering by my admins, but I don't think any of their tinkering was around this area)

@FediTips The first time I moved, I got a flood of emails. The second time I moved, I made sure to disable email notifications before uploading my followers CSV file.

@FediTips I've moved accounts twice, and didn't get a notification flood from either of them. Keep in mind that I'm pretty sure I had notifications off, or at least I think so, I hadn't gotten notifications any other time.

@FediTips Yes, I had a lot of incoming e-mail. It might have been my mistake as I didn't deactivate e-mail notifications from the preferences, here in poliversity, when I migrated from MastodonUno

@FediTips I moved my account last month, and did noch get a flood of mails. The initial wave of moved subscribers did not trigger the mail, but it did trigger the notification sound of the browser tab on desktop.
Two subscribers, which came an hour later, did trigger a mail.
But to be completely honest, I do not know of they followed me before the move, or came from the "hello!"-post on the new server.

@FediTips I did move my profile once but do not remember mails.

I think I got a lot of notifications but I'm not sure anymore, was around 2 years ago I think.

@FediTips
Moved juli 2024 from social to todon.
Didn't get a flood of e-mails but that could have been my settings. For most things I prefer just the notifications, not e-mail.
My followers were just silently transferred as far as I remember.
I followed your 'how to' btw. Worked like a charm. ☺️

@FediTips I started my own instance in February 2025, and I created a new account (this one) maybe half a year later. At both times, I remember getting my inbox full of notifications about people who had "just started following" me.

@FediTips I definitely got flood of some sort when I moved to my current instance about three weeks ago (?), but I can’t recall if it was notifications of following or if not was follow requests. I had to make my account open for anyone to follow for a day, because I was getting a lot of requests to follow.
