@mwl IIRC SteamOS is Arch Linux under the hood, and on the Steam Deck there's a magic button to switch on KDE as a desktop environment. Steam Deck has already been a Linux handheld PC for four years ...
@cstross @mwl yeah, it's Arch under the hood. Used to be Debian. Though obnoxiously and utterly predictably, Valve is largely just taking other people's work and contributing nothing at all back.
Similar to the shit they pulled with 'Steam Machines' where they wouldn't talk to the actual niche OEM/SIs, and didn't provide any real support to the vendors that fell for it.
@cstross @mwl all the people that idolize Valve continually ignore the fact that Steam was always designed to be the most draconian DRM system in existence, intended to make Gabe a billionaire many times over, wrapped in a lot of "oh we're /different/ window dressing." They're not.
e.g. everyone loses their shit over Apple taking a 30% cut, nobody makes a peep about Valve taking a 30%+ cut of everything with strict requirements they be the primary branding on all your materials and more.
