@thibaultamartin UK QWERTY + muscle memory of the AZERTY layout (so I can switch using OS tools and use the French accents when necessary) is what is currently working for me fwiw
@brendan international english keyboard on macOS with two layouts: US, and US International.
In US, pressing ` just prints the character.
In US International, pressing ` is a modifier. If I then press e it prints è.
That's what works best for me so far :)
@thibaultamartin Fair enough. In my situation the UK layout is the easiest to source, and I've used an AZERTY layout often enough that I can often just type from muscle memory without breaking my flow or needing two strokes for accented characters.

QWERTZ still feels sensible to me, but all punctuation useful for programming is so inaccessible 😭

But also let’s mess up symbols for absolutely no reason.
Oh and to type the numbers you need to press shift.
@thibaultamartin @ju A few weeks ago I had my first real contact with AZERTY. It drove me crazy. The passwords contained numbers. The m being in the "wrong" row didn't help either. 😄

For us it's ö, ü and ä.
Also y and z are swapped (I assume because there is practically no usage of y in German)
And special characters are rearranged
@ju oh we do have an umlaut key, but it’s a modifier. Why é, è and ù deserve their own key instead of having ’ and ` modifiers? I guess it’s because of how frequent they are in French.
BUT DID WE REALLY HAVE TO MESS UP ALL THE PUNCTUATION FOR THAT
AND SHIFT FOR NUMBERS ARRRRGH
