When you’re a fossil fuel company with:

- very high and growing decline rates on oil and gas that’s derived from tar sands and shales

- and/or conventional fields heading rapidly towards the end of their profitability, like the North Sea

CCS is a handy way to squeeze out as much oil and gas as possible, and pretend that none of this is a problem for a little longer.

That is its primary utility.
The rest is misdirection and obfuscation.

@urlyman Sounds about right. The internal economics are terrible, though, so you have to find a govt stupid enough to pay for it.
