A Yucca brevifolia (Joshua tree) near the Wee Thump Joshua Tree Wilderness south of Las Vegas. Here's a funny story: When German immigrants settled in the Mojave desert near the San Andreas fault at the base of the Sierra Pelona Mountains they called their settlement "Palmdale." They had heard that there were palm trees in SoCal. Having never seen a palm tree they mistook the Joshua trees for palm trees hence the town's name.

A color portrait photo of a odd looking tree in a desert landscape. The tree is around 12-14 feet tall. From a short central trunk there's many thick twisted branches shooting off in many directions. At the end of each branch is a green tuff of long sharp spike like leaves. The sky is blue and clear.
