Has anyone noticed that central locking offers a minor convenience we could easily do without, at the cost of massive headaches when it inevitably starts going wrong?

It's so hard to fix properly, so it works reliably across all doors. How did it ever become so ubiquitous? Did nobody notice the problems when it was introduced into high end vehicles?

@strypey not to mention electrically operated windows - anyone with a 20 year old vehicle has at least one window that won't open anymore. But the rare soul with a 40 year old vehicle can still open all their windows, because hand cranks never die.
