@Taweret I’m definitely interested to see where they go with it.

You can tell that Carol sees it as a loss of individuality. Since we don’t know what kind of “hive of mind“ this is, we can’t say for sure if she’s correct or to what extent she’s correct. From what I can tell at the very least they were forced into a consensus.

So I’m sure a continuing theme throughout at least the first season will be “is the loss of individuality worth world peace?“.

@Mrfunkedude yeah the hive mind doesn't seem overtly evil except for the glaring fact that it did not ask anyone's consent

@Taweret And that's the thing. The ones that did this may not even exist anymore. There'd be no one to break free from. There's no one to take responsibility.

Imagine you lose your lover and you have no one's to blame but the innocent. That could drive a person mad.

@Taweret I came away from episode 1 with the (admittedly unfounded) suspicion that the writers have some sort of moral axe to grind and they're going to be super preachy about it. But I felt the same way about The Good Place and I ended up loving that show, so... I'll see!

For what it's worth, I found the main character believable as a jaded genre fiction writer.

@cherizilla yeah I'm hoping for something more complex than just 'toxic positivity is bad' because that would get boring fast. ep 2 was encouraging in that regard tho

so there was some cagey dialogue in ep 2 where they ask the collective if they've vegetarians and they just say 'that would be our preference' which is very careful wording. hmm

@Taweret I saw it partly as “we’re also still figuring it out”. It maybe humanizes them that as fast as they figure out a lot of things, Jainism or something like it they are still figuring out (but also see as important).

@Taweret One possible fun twist here, too: from the first episode we know the virus didn’t affect the majority of mammals that they tested, or at least not in a way that the lab noticed, but it did affect at least one mouse/rat in a large test, so I’m curious how many non-human members/minds are in “we” on the planet. The side story about the zoos emptying may not be unrelated to everything else going on.

if they can't kill anything and they still need to eat... I don't think they're burying all those bodies they're collecting

because thematically and narratively we need a dark twist that shows the hive is super evil and that would make sense

@Taweret Oh also, they admitted they accidentally killed 9/10ths of a billion people. (!) I’m not sure they should have any problem feeding all who are left even if they all moved towards vegan agriculture.

@Taweret In the interview in the extras below the show it sounds like Gilligan can’t decide if Carol is the hero or they are (they’re happy!), and I kind of love that ambiguity and am curious how long Gilligan can pull it off. Also in a different interview Gilligan said he was real tired of people seeing his villains as the heroes and emulating them (Walter White, Saul Goodman) and wanted to try to build a show with no villain for a change 😼

@Taweret I’m skeptical any showrunner could be capable of long term mutual antagonists that aren’t villains. More reason I really want to see him try to thread that needle as long as possible. If he succeeds it will be a treat, if he fails it will probably fun to watch him fail, if he’s saying it to cover some darker plan that might be fun, too.
