Quoting is where you make a post and you can see another post within it.
For example I'm going to quote your post within this reply:

Beamship is having a problem updating to 4.5 because of Ruby not updating.
I'm not a sys admin or developer so I'm not sure how to help directly, but you might want to check the instructions at https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/releases/tag/v4.5.0 and raise this as an issue on the Mastodon Github if there's no existing issue at https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues (I couldn't find an existing issue but I'm not 100% sure what to search for).

@FediTips There is also quoting by pasting the link to the post which Mastodon treats as a quote (which can stay after deleting the link). This allows e.g. replying with a quote of another reply.
I hope there will be more software support for this kind of quotes, they are much more readable than Mastodon's handling of link previews.
