At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter whether Vladeck is correct about why Jackson did what she did tonight, nor does it matter if I am correct that her action did some harm and not any significant good. What matters is that the Roberts Supreme Court is very very unlikely to ever order the Trump regime to pay out full SNAP benefits for November. And if the government shutdown drags into December, the Trump regime will not release discretionary funds to pay for any SNAP benefits. 1/

When the case reaches this rogue Supreme Court, the majority may well use it as yet another occasion to allocate even more power to the Trump executive, contrary to any plausible reading of the relevant statutes. 2/

@heidilifeldman I keep coming back to a point Jamelle Bouie has been making: regardless of how you might be able to cobble together seeming textual support, any interpretation that results in an uncheckable Executive so contradicts the entire point of the Constitutional project that it simply *cannot* be correct.

All any one of us rank and file folks can do right now about this wretched mess is to give what we can to blue state food banks (see my pinned post for why it is especially important to fund food banks in blue states). 3/

@heidilifeldman I think poor people in red states are morally irredeemable because of where they live and should starve for their sins. I am very progressive and intelligent

All we can do more generally is to keep fighting Republican Fascism every day that we possibly can. Support groups fighting to for free and fair elections in 2026 and 2028. Help whoever you can to stay out of ICE-CBP clutches. Use your civil rights to assemble and to protest. Get involved at the local and state level, demand that your municipal and state governments do all they can to protect you and to fight Republican Fascism. 4/

Thank everybody you know who is fighting Republican Fascism, including yourself. We have to appreciate the fighters and ourselves for the fighting they/we are doing. 5/

If you are fighting fascism, in the U.S. or elsewhere, stay strong. 6/6

@heidilifeldman Where are the pitchforks?

I know economists are are supposed to imagine/assume can openers but I never thought this was applicable to Americans and when it came to resisting oppression. Instead it seems the worst are actually all for it.
