Detail of Rembrandt's "The Night Watch" at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. The two rectangular spots are where some of the varnish has been removed as part of the research for the current restoration work. Rembrandt painted himself into the scene; that's him peering over the shoulder of the helmeted watchman in the upper left.

A photo showing some details from Rembrandt's "The Night Watch". The detail is roughly the center of the painting, and includes the heads and shoulders of Captain Frans Banninck Cocq and his lieutenant, Willem van Ruytenburch.

If you really want to see detail, the Rijksmuseum's web site has a 717 *gigapixel* image of painting where you can zoom in to see individual brush strokes if you want to.
