I believe it’s only available in Dutch, but “Het Verhaal van Nederland” (The Story of the Netherlands) is a cool app — it’s a collection of audio walking tours that uses GPS to play the segment for what you’re looking at precisely as you come to it, at your own pace. It also tells things like “see the bridge ahead on the left? Take it, then go into the alley…” to minimize needing to check your map (until you discover your bridge has been deleted for the day to make way for a swimming competition)
We followed a loop beginning and ending at Amsterdam’s central station, through some very wealthy old neighborhoods, docks, and what used to be dozens and dozens of warehouses that have been converted to hundreds and hundreds of apartments.
We actually brushed against a random crisis — a lady was frantically trying to break into her brother’s house because he had gone unresponsive on the phone and wasn’t answering the door. We couldn’t help her except to check with her that she’d called the fire department, who showed up moments later to break in. Not long afterwards the ambulance left with the siren screaming, so I suppose they found him.
