@mekkaokereke Of course (many, not all) Democrats were against Mamdani. Make no mistake about this, the Democrats are still a conservative party ... at least by the standards of all other western democracies. They're just being called "liberal" (a term also understood differently in other western democracies) because the Republicans somehow managed to become the new American Nazi Party.

Democratic Leadership is way more vulnerable shawn they like to make out to be, and that's what these this this election made very clear to everyone. There's been a schism going in the party for over a decade now, against these people who don't talk to people they're supposed to represent, and make terrible decisions because of it, and this is pretty much proof that we can actually beat them in a straight contest, primary or general.

This is going to embolden a lot of people.

The only surprise to me to be honest is how quickly and intensely the mask came off at the end: Cuomo basically saying "Vote for me because I'm white and he looks like a scary Muslim is a terrorist", and a bunch of Democrat leadership standing behind him as he tries to terrorize vulnerable people like Republicans do. That's going to be burned into a lot of people's minds.

That's going to be great for us when we go after them.

I'd agree that Schumer and Jeffries took an L, but would not at all cosign this take of "THE DEMS."

I think a lot of Dems, me included, were being appropriately cautious of someone getting that popular that early .. because they could still turn out to be an absolute loser. See Bernie Sanders (who incidentially, I *did* vote for in his primary, a move I mostly regret)

Because when I saw it in real-time, it was a tiny sliver of the Democratic Party that opposed him. The media and many contrarian “leftists” (I use that term lightly based on their bad faith) tried to sell a pack of lies about Democrats.

@mekkaokereke I was thinking about that listening to his acceptance speech, where the biggest cheers were things like going after abusive landlords and unaffordable childcare, which seem like me like a message which would resonate in almost every district in the country.

@mekkaokereke I think we really need to not refer to Democratic voters as "Democrats" since that reinforces the incorrect notion that your identity is tied to who you vote for. When I talk about Democrats and Republicans I am never, ever referring to the people who voted for them. I am referring to the parties themselves and the politicians that are part of them. While I have always voted for Democrats in federal elections, I know that they do not accurately represent me, I am not a Democrat.

@mekkaokereke I suppose one potential outcome is that so many politicians who claim to be Democrats actually have no personal principles at all, and will just follow the political winds in whatever way they're blowing. If they now see that progressive voters will primary establishment liberals AND show up in general elections, plenty may break farther progressive in a craven desire to save their own seats.

So much of the Dem party leadership are in the party because of some single issue precluding them from voting Republican. Not because they have or even desire a plan for the future outside of that paradigm.

Cuomo is an example. It would have been close if Sliwa had not run.

I'm glad Mamdani was able to get another message out to voters. Folks are so done with the big tent bs.

Labour in Britain and the SPD in Germany have the same problem. The parties have moved further and further to the corporate right, abandoning the actual support of their base.
