Andrew Cuomo, who on paper is a Democrat and served as Governor of New York from 2011 to 2021, was just endorsed by Donald Trump.

Pause for a moment and let that sink in.

This is not an isolated incident.

It is a textbook example of why white men cannot be trusted to do anything, without a consistent, demonstrated antiracist practice, but protect and promote the myth of white supremacy when confronted with accountability or consequences.

Phil Ochs captured this dynamic decades ago in the opening lines of “Love Me, I’m a Liberal”:

“In every American community, you have varying shades of political opinion. One of the shadiest of these is the liberals. An outspoken group on many subjects. Ten degrees to the left of center in good times, ten degrees to the right of center if it affects them personally.”

Cuomo’s trajectory embodies that lyric perfectly.

A Democrat by affiliation, he adopted positions and a persona that seemed progressive but when it came to personal survival, reputation, and power, ideology and principle evaporated. He didn’t resist the temptation to align with someone who represents the antithesis of his party’s values. Instead, he doubled down on self-preservation and the systems that uphold white male authority, regardless of the harm inflicted on others.

This behavior is not new.

It’s a recurring pattern in the lives of white men in positions of power:

✔️ When challenged or held accountable, they shift, pivot, and often betray stated ideals to protect themselves.

✔️ When offered an opportunity to uphold justice or equity, they frequently retreat to self-interest.

✔️ When the myth of white supremacy is threatened, their default is to reinforce it, rather than dismantle it.

The Cuomo-Trump endorsement is more than political theater.

It’s a cultural signal: white male power seeks self-preservation first, principles second.

And as long as white men are allowed to dictate the terms of accountability, justice will remain secondary to comfort, control, and maintaining supremacy.

For those of us committed to dismantling these systems, institutions, and policies, the lesson is clear: do not be surprised, do not be complacent, and do not trust the promises of white men who have never been asked to truly give up power.

Accountability is not optional.

The myth of white male supremacy will exploit hesitation, ideological cover, and liberal pretenses every time. Recognizing it is the first step toward living beyond it.
