In New Zealand, petrol retailer Z-Energy ran an ad campaign claiming they're "in the business of getting out of the petrol business".

That wasn't true.

In a landmark greenwashing case brought by Consumer NZ, the Environmental Law Initiative and Lawyers for Climate Action NZ Inc., Z have apologised, but in a really cack-handed way. CEO Lindis Jones twists his words into knots.

“Given our role in the economy and what we sell, and our ambition, it’s critical that anything we say to customers now or in the future is not misunderstood.”

"Misunderstood"? Z-Energy has been sprung for lying. For telling untruths.

There are full page ads from Z-Energy in today's Sunday papers, apologising. Or at least pretending to.
