I enjoyed this profile of Fitzroy. It's a great area, I visit often.

'This deep community campaigning has cemented Fitzroy as the heartland of Melbourne’s progressive politics, Yarra Mayor Stephen Jolly says.

'“If you’re living in Fitzroy, you’re voting Green, socialist, independent or maybe even Labor,” he says.

'The suburb also remains a hub for Melbourne’s LGBTQI+ community, with venues like The 86, a cabaret and cocktail bar, and popular gay nightspot The Peel.

'It holds the title of Melbourne’s first suburb, officially established in 1839. Fitzroy is also among Australia’s smallest and most densely populated, with a population of more than 10,431 and median age of 35, according to latest census data.'

The Age

From slums to gentrification but the ‘magic’ on the street and political heart lives on

Fitzroy has long endured a tense tug of war between gentrification and a battle to hold on tightly to its creativity, multiculturalism, activism and live music scene.
