I have a theory: Melburnians’ experience of winter is FOMO.

Melburnians’ experience of winter here, to me as a newcomer from northern Europe, seems disproportionate to the actual conditions. but we’ve heard from previous immigrants here that their first winter they were ok, but the second they hated as much as any Melburnian hates winter.

and yes the homes here are poorly insulated, and it is a bit chilly, but really - it’s nice most days. there’s some sun almost every day, rain doesn’t go over the top most times, a nice warm jumper is good enough for outside most afternoons.

so why do people here feel the winter so heavily?

my theory: it’s fair enough; we are one of the most wintry cities in the world right this very moment. the vast majority of humanity is in summer right now, and most of the others are significantly closer to the equator than we are, including most others on this continent. and while we’re at a cool 14°C here in #Melbourne, we’re also consuming media, almost exclusively English-speaking media, and almost all those media are produced in places that are, right now, in summer. we are surrounded by a sea of summers, yet here we are, in the chills.

I have suspicions about if this is an official City of #Melbourne marker

#Melbourne has a few unusual “historical” signs

Our state government planned to spend $10m+ on fixing the safety issues on Kerferd Rd, introducing a new protected bike lane, beautiful landscaping, and slowing down vehicle speeds by design. The local councillors scuttled it. We've FOI'd the never released plans to show what could have been. 1/5

I find it interesting that one of the few remaining post offices in the Melbourne CBD is embedded in the law court. Two pre-IT industries keeping each other in business.

At least Auspost is doing their best to change with the times. The legal system still thinks that it’s the 1900s and stamps and signatures still need wet ink. Don’t you dare try and use a scanned copy of a doc.
