As anarchists, we talk about keeping each other safe. Continuing to mask, especially in crowded indoor spaces, is one way we can live that shared value. If you'd like to be involved in this action, show up and start telling people to put on a mask. We'll gladly supply you with masks to distribute. If you know any of the vendors, ask them to show their support for community care by bringing extra masks to their tables and asking any unmasked visitors to wear them.

There are members of our community who will not accept the risk of respiratory illness from an event which is anything less than "masks required". The Boston Anarchist Bookfair has used this language in their policy in previous years, but made the change this year to "please wear a mask" and "masks strongly encouraged" (alongside the removal of accessibility and mitigation policy information from their website). This language leads many to avoid the event, and weakens our sense as a community of the effectiveness of universal masking at making our events safer and more accessible.

We have been asked by the organizers not to directly engage with individual attendees, and despite making this message clear to all involved, it would appear the allure of holding each other accountable face to face is too great. Despite our efforts, it is clear to us that some ungovernable individuals will continue with this course of action.

NOTICE & CALL TO ACTION ‼️😷 - to the attendees (and disappointed non-attendees) of the Boston Anarchist Bookfair:
CRANE Mask Bloc organizers and community members have shared their plan to achieve universal masking at the event. (more about the event covid language in paragraph 3). The stated plan hinges on directly approaching unmasked attendees and asking them to wear a mask (while providing said mask).
