Don't use random "free" QR code generators online, make sure to use a non-redirect link QR code generator (Linux has a few, if you're into LInux).

Last year, I ran into someone's YouTuber/TikTok vehicle with a QR code plastered onto it for their channel, scanned it, and it was "YOUR QR CODE HAS EXPIRED" - QR codes DO NOT NEED A SUBSCRIPTION.

@ai6yr

Libreoffice (available on many platforms) has a QR code generator built in as well.

https://help.libreoffice.org/latest/en-US/text/shared/01/qrcode.html

I made this QR code with with libreoffice writer, and confirmed that the QR code matches the above documentation URL.

It's a QR code that goes to the libreoffice documentation linked in the post

Libre Office also generates several kinds of barcodes in addition to QR codes!

@malte

I thought it useful to suggest libreoffice because that can help people on windows, mac, and some other obscure OSes as well, in addition to linux users.

@alienghic no, it *is* useful!

i didn't mean to contradict, just to put another tool in the toolbox (while maybe a bit more excited than other people would be about said tool 😅)

Damn! Thank you for letting me know about this. I'm going to use it at some point to be really obnoxious, but only to people who will find it funny.

@alienghic that’s great to know I started using LO just recently. I don’t have any immediate need for a QR code but it’s great to know that is available. Thanks.

@chefraven

I was thinking LO was going to be a usable by far more people than some of the other linux command line tools.

@alienghic absolutely. I consider myself a little bit of a tech geek, but not to the Linux range.

@ai6yr I needed to make some for the cat rescue I volunteer with and it was a pain and a half finding one that would just link to what I was asking without redirects *and* add the logo the rescue was asking for. I didn’t realize there was a Linux tool for it! I assume it doesn’t do the logos but I can probably veto those.

Though, QR codes are kinda of a bad idea (IMHO) in a non-trusted environment...
