I’ve not kept up with the latest Mastodon developments, but does anyone know if this sort of feature is planned?
I get that it’s extra complicated with the federated nature, but it feels like something that the major fediverse platforms could agree on a technical implementation of even if yes, technically clients could just choose to show “unapproved” or “hidden” replies.

@cassidy There has been talk of tackling it after quote posts.
The quote post implementation included a way for a post to include proof that it has permission to include a quote, and for other servers to check if that permission is still valid.
Implementing reply restrictions is fairly similar: you want a way to advertise a reply policy for other servers to enforce, and to determine if reply messages federated from other servers comply with that policy.
@cassidy I think we're going to see reply controls in Mastodon sooner or later, but there isn't a timeline.

@cassidy Would be nice. I think Instagram also has the ability to limit comments only be mutuals (or ig people who you follow)
